How to keep eye contact when using a teleprompter

A teleprompter is supposed to solve eye contact, and often it doesn't. People still look like they're reading — because the prompter is in the wrong place, too close, or the script is written for the page instead of the eye.

Here's what actually controls how read you look, roughly in order of impact.

Placement beats everything else

There are two setups, and they are not equivalent. A beam-splitter prompter puts the text on glass directly in front of the lens, so you read through the camera — your gaze is on-axis by construction. A laptop or tablet sitting beside or below the camera puts the text off-axis, and your eyes travel measurably away from the lens on every line.

If your prompter isn't over the lens, no amount of technique fully compensates. It only reduces the drift.

Distance is the variable people ignore

The angle between the lens and your text is what the viewer sees — and that angle depends on distance. Text 30cm to the side of the camera looks obviously off when you're a metre away, and almost invisible when you're four metres back.

This is why studio setups look effortless and desk setups don't. If you can't move the prompter closer to the lens, move yourself further from both. Backing up and zooming in is often the single cheapest improvement available.

Format the script for the eye, not the page

Most reading-drift comes from the eye hunting for the next line. Formatting fixes more of that than practice does.

  • Keep lines short — narrow columns mean less horizontal eye travel per line.
  • Break at natural speech pauses, not at the edge of the screen.
  • Increase font size and reduce how many lines are visible at once.
  • Write the way you speak; complex clauses force you to re-read, and re-reading is visible.
  • Mark deliberate pauses so you have somewhere natural to look up.

Delivery technique that holds up

Read in chunks rather than word by word. Take in a short phrase, deliver it to the lens, then glance back for the next one. This converts a constant sideways drift into occasional breaks — and occasional breaks read as natural thought, not as reading.

Let your focus soften slightly on the lens too. A hard stare is as unnatural as reading, just in a different direction. Imagine one person standing just behind the camera and talk to them.

Software prompters on a laptop: the hardest case

If you're using a prompter app on the same laptop as your webcam, you're in the worst geometry available: the text sits below the lens, at close range, with a wide angle between them. This is the setup that produces the classic downward-reading look.

Two things help. Move the prompter window to the very top of the screen, directly under the camera, and shrink it so your eyes stay in a small area. Then push the laptop further away and use an external keyboard if you need one.

When the take still drifts

Long scripts and multi-take sessions will produce clips where the gaze slips no matter how good the setup is. Rather than re-recording a take that was otherwise good, AI eye contact correction redirects your eyes to the lens afterwards while keeping your blinks and natural look-aways.
